Our West Central Times Newspaper

Newsletters are important communication tools in our neighbourhoods. Many people don’t access the internet and require a written document to learn about local events. Many people aren’t familiar with programs and organizations in their neighbourhood, and wouldn’t know where to look. A newsletter, delivered regularly to people’s mailboxes is an effective, accessible way to connect the neighbourhood and get the word out about events, workshops, programs, issues, and updates.

In August of 2011 Spence Neighbourhood Association and DMSMCA collaborated on publishing a collaborative community newspaper entitled Our West Central Times.

Our West Central Times fills the void left behind with the ending of the publication West Central Streets. The paper provides a voice for the neighbourhood and a space for residents to submit their own stories, opinions, and views. Many organizations and individuals contribute articles to Our West Central Times. Whether it be a historical piece on a favourite neighbourhood spot or landmark, a personal message or story from a local resident or a piece about an upcoming event or celebration, we invite everyone to write for the paper.

We also welcome and encourage advertisement by local businesses or agencies looking to promote a program or event. Our West Central Times has low advertising rates and publishes a total of 7,000 full-colour newspapers which are distributed to all residences and businesses within the West Central neighbourhoods of Spence and Daniel McIntyre and St. Matthews, with a collective number of approximately 5,000 homes and 400 businesses. It is distributed by local residents who are employed to hand deliver the paper.
